Tigresses suffer defeat in final WI ODI

Bangladesh women's cricket team suffered an eight-wicket defeat in their third and final ODI against the West Indies at Warner Park in St Kitts on Friday (Jan 24). The result not only meant the Tigresses lose the three-match series 2-1, but also denied them direct qualification to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025.

After bouncing back from a crushing nine-wicket defeat in the series opener, Nigar Sultana Joty's side earned a convincing 60-run victory in the second ODI – which is also the Tigresses' first win against the Windies. Bangladesh needed a win in the third game to claim their maiden ODI series victory over the Windies and also seal the final qualification spot for the World Cup.

With 21 points, Bangladesh finished seventh in the ICC Women's Championship standings – a spot behind New Zealand, who are only ahead of the Tigresses due to a better net run rate and have now qualified for the World Cup in India later this year. Hosts India, Australia, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are the other teams who had already earned direct qualification to the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh have now joined West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan, Scotland, and Thailand in the World Cup qualifiers from which two top teams will book their places in the main event.
