Dr Subhagata Choudhury passes away

Renowned Bangladeshi physician and science writer Dr. Subhagata Choudhury has died at the age of 78 after battling cancer for more than half a decade. The renowned medical writer breathed his last on Wednesday (Jan 15) morning, local media reported citing family sources.

It was learnt that, Subhagata fell ill in the morning and was taken to the Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute in Dhaka, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Subhagata was undergoing chemotherapy. He suddenly fell ill in the morning and died at home. We took him to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital. His body has been kept at BIRDEM’s mortuary.

His last rites will be performed on Friday.

Subhagata Choudhury was born in Sylhet in 1947. He began his education in a children's school in Sylhet, then studied at Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan, and later at various schools, colleges, and medical institutions in Bangladesh and abroad.

He retired from government service in 2004 after a distinguished 35-year career, during which he taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate medical institutions and served as the principal of Chittagong Medical College.

Subhagata conducted research in medical science at St. Thomas' Hospital in London and traveled to the U.K., Germany, Singapore, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, and West Africa for research, training, and presenting papers. His research focused on biochemistry, nutrition, and medical education methods.

Subhagata was widely known as a popular medical science writer and translated several medical textbooks into Bengali. He published 38 books and received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2021. 

He was a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and published more than 50 research papers in national and international medical journals. In recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine, he was honored with the Sher-e-Bangla National Award.
