Attack on news outlets will not be tolerated: Nahid

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam on Monday (Nov 25) warned that any attack on news outlets would not be tolerated. “If people have any allegation against any newspaper, they can raise it but this must be a peaceful one. We do not support the vandalism in newspapers’ offices or giving pressure to stop publication of newspapers,” he told a press briefing in Dhaka. The regular press briefing was held at Foreign Service Academy in the evening, local media reported.

The information adviser said such incidents will not be tolerated in the future and legal action will be taken against those involved in newspaper office vandalism.

Nahid said in the last few days, one kind of discomposure was seen over the Daily Prothom Alo while demonstration was staged in front of the Prothom Alo head-office yesterday and its Rajshahi office was vandalised today.

Demonstrations were also staged against the newspaper in different areas of the country, including Chattogram and Brahmanbaria today, he added.

Mentioning that everyone has the right to hold meetings and rallies, the information adviser said if the people have allegations, they can seek legal measures. He called upon all to refrain from anarchic incidents that stain the country’s image.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam were also present at the press briefing.
