As the country prepares for the 13th National Parliament election, at least 147 political parties have submitted applications for registration with the Bangladesh Election Commission, officials confirmed on Sunday (Jun 22). The final tally is expected to be announced officially by the Election Commission Secretariat's Public Relations Wing after compilation of information.
The EC initially invited registration applications from interested political parties on Mar 10. Within Apr 20, a total of 65 new political parties applied.
However, due to the large volume of interest, the commission extended the deadline by two months, until Jun 22.
On the last day for registration submission (today), several parties-including the National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party and Janatar Party Bangladesh submitted their applications at the EC headquarters in capital's Agargaon.
Party leaders, talking to journalists while submitting their documents, expressed confidence that their applications would meet all the stipulated requirements set by the commission. They also revealed their proposed party names and electoral symbols.
"We have submitted our application after a thorough review of the Election Commission's criteria and relevant laws," said NCP Convener Nahid Islam at the Election Bhaban." We are confident that we have met all the conditions and provided the necessary documentation," he added.
