Bayern thrash Frankfurt to move 8 clear at the top

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich restored their eight-point advantage at the top of the table with a 4-0 win against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (Feb 23). Title holders Bayer Leverkusen cut the gap to Bayern to five points on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Holstein Kiel, but the Bavarians continued their strong Bundesliga form.

Bayern Munich stretched their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to eight points after thrashing third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt at Allianz Arena.

Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen had reduced the gap to five points with a 2-0 win at Holstein Kiel on Saturday but Vincent Kompany's side responded in fine fashion.

After a frustrating 45 minutes Bayern took the lead in the third minute of first-half injury time after excellent link-up play in midfield allowed Leroy Sane to square for Michael Olise making no mistake for his seventh league goal of the season.

Sixteen minutes after the break, Bayern doubled their lead as Frankfurt failed to clear a corner and Hiroki Ito reacted fastest to side-foot home from close range.

Jamal Musiala added the third, receiving the ball from Alphonso Davies before dancing his way through the Frankfurt backline and powering a shot past Kevin Trapp.

Substitute Serge Gnabry added a fourth goal in stoppage time, sliding the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Trapp.

Bayern have the chance to move 11 points clear at the top when they make the trip to seventh-placed Stuttgart on Friday.

Leipzig recover from shock
Heidenheim stunned Leipzig by taking a 2-0 lead in just 13 minutes. Mathias Honsak scored the opener in the six minute and Marvin Pieringer extended the guests' advantage from the spot.

Leipzig pulled one back before the break as Lois Openda was served by Benjamin Sesko, who then levelled himself from the spot in the 64th after Openda was fouled by Tim Siersleben inside the box.

The draw meant Leipzig failed to move back into fifth and the Europa League spot, now occupied by Mainz. So far this year, they have only won two of their eight Bundesliga matches.

Heidenheim, meanwhile, are 16th and sit in the relegation play-off spot. With the draw, they claimed a point for the first time in over a month and ended a run of five consecutive league defeats.

On Saturday, champions Bayer Leverkusen defeated Holstein Kiel 2-0 and Niko Kovac claimed his first league win as Borussia Dortmund coach in a 6-0 thrashing of Union Berlin.
