Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman scored first half goals as a dominant PSV Eindhoven picked up a first win of their Champions League campaign with an impressive 4-0 victory over 10-man Girona at the Philips Stadion on Tuesday (Nov 5).
United States international Malik Tillman scored and assisted as PSV Eindhoven beat 10-man Girona in the Champions League. Eredivisie leaders PSV took an early lead through Ryan Flamingo, who latched on to Tillman's long throw with a volley that beat Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from close range.
There was an element of controversy about the goal as Tillman appeared to cross the touchline while taking the throw, but video assistant referee (VAR) David Coote did not intervene.
Tillman doubled the advantage when he drifted inside from the left wing and beat Gazzaniga with a low drive at his near post.
Girona, who finished third in LaLiga last season, were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Arnau Martinez was shown a second yellow card after bringing down Noa Lang at the edge of the penalty area.
After VAR denied PSV substitute Ismael Saibari a goal for standing on the foot of defender Olivier Boscagli, Johan Bakayoko put the game beyond Girona with a strike into the bottom corner.
Boscagli then inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net after Gazzaniga had parried an effort from Saibari.
The victory is the Dutch club's biggest in the Champions League since 1992.
PSV's first Champions League win of the season moves them on to five points after four games and above Girona, who remain on three points.
On matchday five PSV host Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk while Girona travel to Austria to face Sturm Graz.
