Fakhrul demands national polls after minimum reforms

Bangladesh Nationalist Party – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday (Jan 21) called for taking measures for holding elections after completing minimum reforms. "We are not saying that we want elections just now. If the election is held following the minimum reforms, most of the existing problems will be solved," he said. Mirza Fakhrul was addressing a discussion organized by the Zia Memorial Library on the occasion of the 89th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and the 12th founding anniversary of the Zia Memorial Library at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club in Dhaka, local media reported.

Mirza Fakhrul said, "I believe that our chief adviser will call us on these issues very soon and come to a solution. We will reach a consensus through discussion."

Chaired by Zia Memorial Library President Abdus Salam and moderated by former student leader Abdus Sattar Patwari, the discussion was attended by educationist Professor Mahbub Ullah, policy researcher Mahadi Amin, Open University Vice Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, educationist Afroza Khanam Rita, journalist Amirul Islam Kagoji, teachers' leader Zakir Hossain, social activist Sayyid Abdullah, Zia Memorial Library's Zahir Dipti, Manjur Elahi, Kazi Zahirul Islam Bulbul and Hasan Al Arif, among others.
