Spain beat Denmark to secure top spot in group

Spain beat Denmark to secure top spot in group

Spain made sure of top spot in Group 4 of League A in the UEFA Nations League on Friday (Nov 15) courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen. La Roja had already booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition ahead of their clash with the Danes, but the narrow success has allowed them to secure first spot in the section ahead of their final game against Switzerland on Monday. Denmark, meanwhile, remain second in the group, two points clear of third-placed Serbia ahead of their meeting on Monday, so Brian Riemer's side are still in a strong position to advance to the final eight.

Spain secured top spot in their Nations League group with victory at Denmark. The European champions were already through to the quarter-finals but needed to win at Parken Stadium to progress as Group A4 winners.

Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he latched on to Ayoze Perez's pass before slotting in.

Former Newcastle and Leicester winger Perez got on the scoresheet himself in the second half when he finished off a flowing Spain attack, firing beyond Kasper Schmeichel and into the bottom corner.

Gustav Isaksen gave Denmark some late hope when he prodded in but they could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.

The defeat for Denmark means they still have work to do if they want to join Spain in progressing.

They are second in group but face Serbia on Monday in a fight for a finish in the top two.
