10 vigilance teams formed to curb dengue outbreak

The government has formed 10 vigilance teams to properly implement its drive against aedes mosquitoes across the country. "A total of 10 vigilance teams have been formed to properly implement, coordinate and closely monitor the anti-mosquito drive to combat the outbreak of dengue intensively," according to an official release issued Monday (Sep 23).

In an attempt to tackle the dengue situation across the country, including in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas, the decision was taken in an emergency meeting at the Secretariat in the capital on Monday morning. Secretary of Local Government Division (LGD) Abu Hena Morshed Zaman presided over the meeting.

Of the teams, four will work in DSCC areas, three will work in DNCC areas and one team each has been formed for other city corporations including Narayanganj, Gazipur and Chattogram. Besides, another team has been formed for the vulnerable areas under Savar, Dohar, Tarabo, Rupganj and other municipalities.

A seven-member committee has also been formed for collecting information and coordinating the programme headed by additional and joint secretaries of LGD under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives. The teams will visit at least three dengue-prone areas daily and monitor the government’s dengue prevention programme in coordination with chief executives of the city corporations and municipalities.

To save people from the dengue surge, Monday’s meeting also discussed creating mass awareness, destroying the breeding grounds of the mosquitoes and conducting cleaning operations.

Reports which would include necessary steps related to the drive against the outbreak would have to be submitted regularly to the Information Collection Committee under the LGD. The reports, containing necessary steps on combating dengue and other related information, will be broadcast and displayed through websites, mass media and social media.

Additional secretaries at the LGD M Nazrul Islam, AKM Tariqul Alam, M Fazlur Rahman, Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) M Mahmudul Hasan, Administrator of Narayanganj City Corporation AHM Quamruzzaman and other LGD officials, among others, were present in the meeting.
