Country sees a gradual rise in Covid-19 infection rate

The country sees a gradual increase in Covid-19 infection rate as most of the people are not following health rules properly. This was told by Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam on Sunday (Mar 14).

“Now we are observing that young and healthy people are being infected by the deadly virus compared to previous times in the country… most coronavirus positive patients need ICU supports” he told a programme at the TB Hospital at Shyamoly in the city, the DGHS sources said.

The DGHS DG asked the authorities of all hospitals particularly Covid-19 dedicated hospitals across the country to increase service facilities of both general and ICU beds for coronavirus patients.

Dr Md Robed Amin, a spokesperson of media cell of DGHS, said recent increase in Covid-19 positive cases has been attributed to rampant movement of the people, saying they are not following health codes.

He observed that increase of public gatherings, less use of masks and hand sanitizers are mainly responsible for surging coronavirus positive cases.

Bangladesh recorded 18 novel coronavirus (Covid-19) deaths and 1,159 fresh cases overnight, a press release of the DGHS said on Sunday. Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 7.15 percent tested positive, while 1.53 percent died so far since the first Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the country on Mar 8, 2020.

In the backdrop of a rise in Covid-19 cases, Cabinet Division on Saturday (Mar 13) issued a directive on following heath rules to contain the spread of lethal virus in the country.
