The global confirmed Covid-19 cases surpassed 37.7 million as of Tuesday (Oct 13) morning, according to the latest tally from John Hopkins University (JHU). The deaths from the coronavirus have been recorded 1,078,868, according to the JHU data. Besides, more than 26 million patients recovered from coronavirus.
The United States has registered over 214,000 deaths and more than 7.7 million cases – both the world’s highest. India registered 66,732 new cases over the past 24 hours, and its Covid-19 tally rose to 7,120,538 on Monday. The death toll reached 109,150 with 816 deaths since Sunday morning, the ministry's data showed.
The third-worst-hit country Brazil has counted 5,103,408 cases and 150,689 deaths.
Meanwhile, a new Australian study suggested SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, can remain infectious for 28 days in a lab, a significantly longer time than previously thought.
The chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) has termed herd immunity against Covid-19 "scientifically and ethically problematic.”
The virus, which causes the respiratory infection Covid-19, was first detected in the city of Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The outbreak spread quickly across the globe in the first months of 2020 and declared a global pandemic by the WHO on Mar 11.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s Covid-19 caseload stood at 379,738 on Monday with the detection of 1,472 new cases in 24 hours until morning. Health authorities also announced 31 more deaths during the period, taking total fatalities to 5,555.
With 1,531 patients recovering during this period, the total recoveries from the coronavirus increased to 294,391.
The fatality rate in Bangladesh is 1.46 percent, said a handout of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The country reported its first cases on Mar 8. The number of cases reached the 300,000-mark on Aug 26.
The first death was reported on Mar 18 and the death toll exceeded 5,000 on Sep 22.
