Bangladesh on Wednesday (May 27) saw further hike in coronavirus cases as 1,541 new patients tested positive for the virus in the span of 24 hours on Wednesday, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 38,292. During the period, 22 more people died from coronavirus, taking the death tally to 544. In the last 24 hours, 346 coronavirus patients made full recovery, raising the number of total recoveries to 7,925 total.
Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure at the daily online briefing.
In the last 24 hours, 48 laboratories across the country tested 8,015 samples, she added.
Covid-19 infection rate for Wednesday is recorded at 19.22 percent.
Against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 20.7 percent and mortality rate is 1.42 percent in Bangladesh, Dr Nasima said.
Among the deceased, 20 were male and two were female.
Dr Nasima said that another child below the age of 10 years died from Covid-19.
Age analysis of the victims shows that one was aged below 10, two between 21 and 30, two between 31 and 40, two between 41 and 50, seven between 51 and 60, seven between 61 and 70 and another between 71 and 80 years, she said.
10 out of 22 patients died in Dhaka division, another 10 in Chattogram division and two others in Sylhet division.
Five people died in the capital city, three in Dhaka district, one in Munshiganj and another in Narshingdi district. In Chattogram division, two died in Chattogram district, three in Noakhali, two in Cumilla, one in Cox’s Bazar and two more in Chandpur. One died in Sylhet district and another in Moulavibazar, Dr Nasima said.
Out of the 22 patients, 21 died in hospitals while one patient died at home.
Dr Nasima cited WHO and said coronavirus cannot be spread through breastfeeding and said mothers can continue to nurture their infant children.
"Please follow appropriate safety and cleaning measures to stop the viral infection," she said.
Dr Nasima said there are 13,264 isolation beds across the country while 700 more are being prepared.
“Currently, there are 299 ICUs and 106 dialysis units at hospitals of the country.”
Across the country, 281 more people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours while 2,789 were home and institutionally quarantined during the same period.
As of May 27, 10:27 GMT, 352,671 people have died so far from the Covid-19 outbreak and there are 5,704,173 currently confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.
China was the world’s first country which on Jan 11 reported the first death from the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province.
