Spain thrash Romania in final qualifier

Spain thrash Romania in final qualifier

Spain rounded off their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win at home to Romania on Tuesday (Nov 18) on an evening when doubt was cast over whether coach Robert Moreno would take charge of the team at next year's tournament. Spain had sealed their place at the finals a month ago and clinched top spot in Group F with a 7-0 win at home to Malta on Friday.

Spain wrapped up their successful Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win against Romania.

Fabian Ruiz gave the three-times European champions an early lead with a close-range finish before Gerard Moreno flicked home Santi Cazorla's cross.

Moreno side-footed in his second of the game before Adrian Rus turned the ball into his own net to make it 4-0 before half-time.

Mikel Oyarzabal swept in a fifth deep in stoppage time to complete the win.

Spain topped Group F with 26 points after winning eight and drawing two of their 10 games.

Sweden, who like Spain had already secured their place at Euro 2020 before the final round of fixtures, finished as runners-up on 21 points. Romania finished fourth with 14.

Romania had no chance of qualifying from the group but were already assured of a playoff place via the UEFA Nations League.

Coach Moreno's position was called into question an hour before the game kicked off as several media reports said he would not take charge of the side at Euro 2020, suggesting Luis Enrique could return after leaving in June for personal reasons.
