Maulana Bhashani’s 43rd death anniversary observed

The 43rd death anniversary of legendary politician Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was observed on Sunday (Nov 17) across the country with due respect. Popularly known as ‘Majlum Janoneta’, the leader of the downtrodden, Maulana Bhasani, passed away on Nov 17 in 1976.

Marking the day, different political parties, social and cultural organisations arranged various programmes, local media reported.

Bhashani Oikyo Jote and National Awami Party (NAP) Bhashani organized a memorial meeting at the Jatiyo Press Club auditorium.

Information Minister and Bangladesh Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud addressed the function as the chief guest with Bhashani Oikya Jote Convener Bangadip MA Bhashani in the chair.

Besides, Awami League Dhaka City South Unit General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, Awami League leaders Balaram Podder and MA Karim and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote General Secretary Arun Sarker Rana, among others, addressed it.

In observance of the day, the Bhashani Sriti Sangsad arranged a discussion and doa mahfil at Bhashani Bhaban in the city’s Naya Paltan area.

Former minister Noor Mohammad Khan, also a close associate of Maulana Bhashani, addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Bhashani Smriti Sangsad president Ziaul Huq Milu and general secretary Kazi Munirul Huda also spoke.

The death anniversary of Maulana Bhashani was also observed in a befitting manner amid different programmes in Tangail.

To mark the day, people of different strata paid glowing tributes to Bhashani by placing wreaths at his grave at Santosh in Tangail.

A Doa and Milad Mehafil was arranged seeking eternal peace of his departed soul on the premises of his grave. Destitute people were served foods on the occasion.

Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Alauddin along with other senior teachers, students and employees of the university and family members of Maulana Bhasani placed wreaths at his grave.

Krishak Sramik Janata League president Bangabir Abdul Kader Siddique also paid homage to Maulana Bhashani by placing wreaths at his grave.

Besides, lawmakers Sanwar Hossain and Tanvir Hasan Choto Monir, Tangail district Awami League and Zila Porishad Administrator Fazlur Rahman Khan Faruque, Tangail municipality mayor Jamilur Rahman Miron placed wreaths on the occasion.

Different organizations and political parties including Jatiyo Party, BNP, Jatiyo Gonotantrik Party, NAP, Chhatra League, Tangail Press Club, Prokoushol Sramik Union, M M Ali College, Nirapad Sarak Chai paid rich tributes to Maulana Bhashani by placing wreaths at his grave.

Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, born in 1880 in Dhangara in Sirajganj, was the son of Haji Sharafat Ali Khan. He gained immense popularity among peasants. He is regarded as the proponent of secular and left-leaning politics in Bangladesh.

He was the founder president of the Awami Muslim League which later became Bangladesh Awami League. He also formed a progressive political organization called National Awami Party (NAP).

Bhasani played a very significant role in the 1969 movement against Pakistan, which eventually led to the collapse of the Ayub regime and release of Bangabandhu and other co-accused in the so-called Agartala conspiracy case.
