President Hamid attends Janaza of Ershad

President Md. Abdul Hamid today attended the second Namaz-e-Janaza of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Jatiyo Party Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad at South Plaza of the Jatiyo Sangsad complex. The head of the state also paid his tribute to Ershad, former President and several times elected Member of Parliament by placing wreath on his coffin before Janaja, local media reported.

On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her military secretary Major General Mia Md Zainul Abedin paid tribute to the opposition leader by placing wreath on his coffin.

Later, Deputy Speaker Md. Fazley Rabbi Mia and Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury, on behalf of Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, placed wreath at the coffin of Ershad.

Deputy Opposition Leader and Japa Co-chairman Begum Rowshan Ershad paid her last homage to their founder party chief by placing wreath on his coffin. Later, Bangladesh Awami League also placed a wreath at the coffin of the Japa chairman.

The second Namaz-e-Janaza was held at around 10:50 am.

Md. Fazley Rabbi Mia, Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak took part in the Janaza. Besides, Awami League leaders Tofail Ahemd and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, BNP leader Barrister Maudud Ahmed, Jatiyo Party leaders G M Quader, A B M Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Kazi Feroz Rashid, Anisul Islam Mahmud and Abu Hossain Babla, among others, attended the janaza.

Prior to the Namaj-e-Janaza there, Ershad’s spouse Begum Rowshan Ershad and younger brother G M Quader and Awami League advisory council member Tofail Ahmed, MP, spoke there.

President Hamid also offered a Munajat after Namaj-e-Janaza where Speaker, deputy speaker, ministers, lawmakers, senior leaders of Awami League, BNP, Jatiyo Party leaders and other political parties, well-wishers, officials and employees of the parliament attended.

They sought eternal peace of the departed soul of the opposition leader, who breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka on Sunday (Jul 14) morning after being on life support for 10 days.

Ershad had been suffering from multiple diseases, including age-related health complications with lung and kidney difficulties. He was 89.

His body will be kept at the CMH mortuary. It will be flown to his home district Rangpur on Tuesday where his fourth Janaza will be held after Zohr prayers at the Zilla School grounds. He will be laid to rest at the Military Graveyard in Banani the same day.

Ershad’s Qulkhwani will be held on Wednesday at Gulshan’s Azad mosque.
