Australia beat England, India beat NZ

A century by Steve Smith led Australia to a 12-run win over England, and New Zealand made short work of India at the Oval in Cricket World Cup warmup matches on Saturday (May 25). New Zealand won by six wickets a game of only 78 overs.

England fell to a 12-run defeat by Australia in a thrilling World Cup warm-up match in Southampton after Steve Smith's first century since being banned for his part in the ball-tampering scandal.

Smith hit 116 off 102 balls in an impressively composed innings to steer his side to 297-9. James Vince and Jos Buttler struck fine fifties to seemingly put England on course for victory, only for Australia to regularly peg the hosts back.

Needing 15 off the last over, England lost their two final wickets to end a disappointing and disjointed chase.

England, who also sustained a series of injury worries, face Afghanistan in another warm-up on Monday before facing South Africa in Thursday's World Cup opener.

Defending champions Australia begin their campaign against Afghanistan on Jun 1 after a warm-up match against Sri Lanka on Monday.

At the Oval, Ross Taylor hit 71 and Kane Williamson 67 as New Zealand reached 180-4 in the 38th over to overhaul India's 179 all out in the 40th over.

India, which chose to bat first, was 115-8 until Ravindra Jadeja hit 54 and combined with Kuldeep Yadav for 62.

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult took 4-33 in 6.2 overs and medium-pacer James Neesham 3-26.

Virat Kohli was bowled by medium-pacer Colin de Grandhomme on 18, beaten by a ball which cut in late.

The warmup results are unofficial as they're 13-a-side ODIs.

On Sunday, Bangladesh and Pakistan meet in Cardiff, and South Africa face the West Indies in Bristol.
