All set to hold DNCC mayor election

The residents of Dhaka North City Corporation are set to cast their votes on Thursday (Feb 28) to elect their new mayor. Apart from the DNCC mayoral by-polls, 36 new wards 18 each in DNCC and DSCC - will also go to polls on Thursday. Besides, elections to the posts of female councillors of six reserve seats each in two city corporations will be held on Thursday.

The campaigns for the mayoral post in the by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) ended at midnight on Tuesday (Feb 26). The voting will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday (Feb 28) for the mayoral post in 54 wards of DNCC and councillor post in the new 36 wards of Dhaka North and South.

The day is a holiday in the DNCC constituencies and 18 wards of Dhaka South. The holiday will not be applicable to those with exam centres.

Bangladesh Awami League candidate Atiqul Islam is contesting the mayoral race under "Boat" symbol, Shafin Ahmed from Jatiyo Party under "Plough" symbol, Anisur Rahman Dewan from NPP under "Mango" symbol, independent candidate Abdur Rahim under "Table Clock", and Shaheen Khan from PDP is contesting it under "Tiger" symbol.

According Bangladesh Electon Commission, no processions, rallies or meetings are allowed in the election constituencies from 12 a.m. on Wednesday (Feb 27) to 12 a.m. on Mar 3.

The Election Commission imposed a ban on movement of motorbikes in DNCC areas for its by-polls from 12 midnight Feb 27 to 12 midnight on Mar 1.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on Nov 30, 2017. He was elected mayor on Apr 28, 2015.
