Bale scores 100th Real goal in derby win

Gareth Bale scored his 100th Real Madrid goal as they beat Atletico in the Madrid derby to overtake their rivals into second place.

Real Madrid have beaten Atletico 3-1 to leapfrog them in Spain’s La Liga and go within five points of leader F.C. Barcelona.

Real took the lead on 16 minutes after Sergio Ramos flicked on Toni Kroos’ corner and Casemiro volleyed past Jan Oblak at the Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday (Feb 9).

Atletico equalised when Antoine Griezmann scored from Angel Correa’s pass on 25 minutes. There was a tense wait for VAR to confirm the decision with the linesman’s flag raised in error.

Sergio Ramos put Real Madrid back in front from the spot two minutes before half time. Again the decision went to VAR with Atletico Madrid players complaining that Jose Gimenez’ foul having been outside the box.

In the second half substitute Gareth Bale scored the third running on to a Luka Modric pass on 74 minutes.

It was Bale’s 100th goal for Real and he might have scored the fourth but he headed Karim Benzema’s cross just over Oblak’s bar.

Before Bale got the third Alvaro Morata thought he had equalised but VAR intervened in favour of the visitors.

Morata had raced away and lobbed Thibaut Courtois but the flag was raised and VAR confirmed the referee’s assistant had made the right call. “I don’t normally comment on VAR. It is something that will get better. I don’t have the replays that they have. I hope they got the decisions right,” Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said.

Later on Saturday Espanyol host Rayo Vallecano and Huesca travel to Girona. Earlier Getafe beat Celta Vigo 3-1.
