The second phase of the fifth Upazila council elections will be held in 129 units of the local government body on Mar 18.
Bangladesh Election Commission will hold the second phase of the Upazila Parishad Election on Mar 18. Similar to the first phase, scheduled for Mar 10, the polls will be held under party banners. The commission also decided to dispatch two assistant returning officers to sadar upazilas.
The deadline by which to submit nomination papers is Feb 18. Returning officers will scrutinize the nomination papers by Feb 20. The deadline for withdrawing one’s candidacy is Feb 27.
On Sunday, the Election Commission announced that the first phase of the Upazila Parishad Election will be held on Mar 10.
The first phase will be held in 87 upazilas under 12 districts — under the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Rajshahi divisions — the Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told a press briefing, local media reported.
Announcing the polls schedule, he also said that aspirants will have to submit their nomination forms by Feb 11. The forms will be scrutinized on Feb 12, and after that, candidates will have till Feb 19 to withdraw from the race.
The commission plans to hold the elections of around 480 upazilas, in five phases, this year, starting on Mar 10.
The elections will be the first under the newly-formed Bangladesh Awami League government that came to power through the 11th general elections held on Dec 30 last year.
Helal Uddin Ahmed said the commission sent a proposal for vetting to the law ministry on use of electronic voting machines or EVMs at Sadar Upazilas during the polls.
He added that EVMs will not be used in the first phase polls to 87 Upazilas on Mar 18.
