Syeda Zakia Noor lone candidate for Kishoreganj-1

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League aspirant Dr Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi is the lone candidate for Kishoreganj-1 constituency in reelections after scrutinizing the nomination forms.

Bangladesh Election Commission on Sunday (Feb 3) approved nomination of Zakia Noor while it canceled nomination papers of Ganatantri Party presidium member Advocate Bhupen Chandra Bhowmik Dolon and Jatiyo Party candidate Md Mostaeen Billah.

After scrutinizing the nomination papers submitted to the returning office, Kishoreganj deputy commissioner and Returning Officer Md Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury made the announcement, local media reports said.

Zakia Noor is younger sister of late Syed Ashraful Islam. Their father Syed Nazrul Islam, the acting President of Bangladesh during the Liberation War, was among four national leaders who were killed in jail in 1975.

Kishoreganj-1 fell vacant after the death of former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, who was re-elected MP from the constituency in the Dec 30 national election. He could not take oath due to illness and sought time to the Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for oath.

On Jan 22, the Election Commission had announced that the re-election in the Kishoreganj 1 constituency will be held on Feb 28.

As per the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination paper has been fixed Jan 31, while nomination scrutiny on Feb 3 and last date for nomination withdrawal on Feb 10.
