Five aspirants allowed contesting DNCC by-poll

Bangladesh Election Commission on Saturday (Feb 2) accepted the nomination papers of five mayoral candidates including Bangladesh Awami League nominee Atiqul Islam for by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral post slated for Feb 28. The commission canceled the nomination papers of Jatiyo Party nominee Miles singer Shafin Ahmed on charge of loan default.

After scrutiny of the nomination papers, Returning Officer and Election Commission Joint Secretary Md Abul Kasem announced the decision at his office at Election Training Institute in Dhaka, local media reports said.

Except Atiqul, other valid candidates are Anisur Rahman Dewan of National People’s Party (NPP), Bobby Hajjaj of Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and independent candidate Abdur Rahim.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of its mayor Annisul Huq.

Election to councilor and reserved women councilor posts in newly inducted 36 wards of Dhaka south and north city corporations will also be held on Feb 28.
