Atiqul gets AL ticket for DNCC mayoral polls

Atiqul Islam, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has got the ruling Banglaesh Awami League's ticket to contest the mayoral race in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Bangladesh Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the announcement after the party's Parliamentary Board meeting held at Gono Bhaban on Saturday (Jan 26), local media reports said.

Meanwhile, Dr Syeda Zakia Nur, daughter of Syed Nazrul Islam, the first acting president of the country, got the Awami League nomination for Kishoreganj-1.

Both elections are scheduled for Feb 28.

Kishoreganj-1 seat fell vacant after veteran Awami League lawmaker Syed Ashraful Islam, also former public administration minister, died on Jan 3, just three days after the election.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on Nov 30, 2017.

On Jan 9 last year, the Bangladesh Election Commission had declared the schedule of the DNCC by-polls and elections to the new wards, setting Feb 26 for voting. The polls were not held as the High Court stayed the election schedule for six months. On Jan 16 this year, the HC cleared the way for holding the polls.
