NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018

Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) along with BASIS Student’s Forum has organized consecutively for the 4th time NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018.

This year 2000 participants have submitted their project. Out of them Top 40 teams are selected for the Hack-a-Thon. On Oct 19-20 top 40 teams will fight in 36 hours long Hack-a-Thon.

This year, NASA has organized this event in 250 cities globally. From Bangladesh nine cities (Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal and Comilla) have participated in this global Hack-a-Thon. This year’s campaign involved approximately 50 lac students virtually and approximately 1,00,000 students will take part physically in this event.

On Friday (Oct 19) at the opening ceremony, BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir, BASIS Vice-President (Finance) Mushfiqur Rahman, NASA Space Apps Challenge Convener Didarul Alam, Joint Convener Ariful Hasan Opu were present. 

Regarding NASA Space Apps Challenge BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir said, NASA Space Apps Challenge is an international mass collaboration focused on space exploration that takes place over 48-hours in 250 cities around the world. 

Convener of NASA Space Apps Challenge Didarul Alam said, last year, we received more than 850 projects from five cluster categories. Among them 50 teams were invited to participate at 48 hours global hackathon. It’s been a great honor for us that, at the people choice’s award among 220 cities all over the world Bangladesh obtained 3rd and 5th place. This year we have sorted top 40 projects out of 2000 projects. We are hopeful to do better this time. 

Joint Convener of NASA Space Apps Challenge Ariful Hasan Opu said, this year NASA has announced six challenge categories comprising 20 sub categories. Besides space, our young and talented scientists will work on the categories like weather, volcanoes, mars and many more. Bangladesh is constantly making progress for the past four years, we are hopeful that Bangladesh’s flag will be uploaded much higher this year. 

After 36 hours Hack-a-Thon, on Saturday (Oct 20) the prize giving ceremony will take place. Posts, Telecommunications & ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar will grace the occation as chief guest. Posts & Telecommunication Divisions Secretary Shyam Sunder Sikder will be present as special guest.
