The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Arifur Rehman Alvi has been elected the 13th President of Pakistan, according to results provided by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday (Sep 4).
Alvi, who is now set to succeed the outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain, edged out Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-backed chief of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Fazlur Rehman and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan in the presidential race by garnering more votes than both his rivals combined, reports said.
The newly-elected president will take oath of office on Sep 9 after the expiry of the five-year term of incumbent President Hussain.
