Is Mbappe suspended for the final?

Is Mbappe suspended for the final?

Kylian Mbappe has been one of France’s best players at the World Cup this summer. He has scored three goals for Les Bleus and terrorised Belgium in their semi-final on Tuesday night.

France made it to the final thanks to a Samuel Umtiti goal and they will play either England or Croatia in Moscow on Sunday (Jul 15).

But why will Mbappe not be suspended? Here are the World Cup yellow card rules you need to know…

How many yellow cards has Kylian Mbappe got?

Kylian Mbappe has been booked twice at the World Cup, with his second yellow card coming in the semi-final win over Belgium.

Now, usually that would lead to a one-game suspension in France’s next outing. FIFA rules at the World Cup stipulate that two yellow cards warrant a suspension.

However, FIFA’s rules are modified when the tournament reaches the latter stages.

Why is Kylian Mbappe not suspended for World Cup final?

FIFA wipe all yellow cards at the semi-final stages of the World Cup. It effectively means a player cannot be suspended for the final simply for picking up one booking.

Players sent off in the semi-final will miss the showpiece event.

Mbappe’s team-mate N’Golo Kante also earned a yellow card in the semi-final but will likely start the final on Sunday (Jul 15).
