Train services resume in the country

Train services across the country resumed on Wednesday (Jan 29) morning after more than 28 hours of suspension as train drivers and other staff called off their strike early Wednesday. However, some trains may be delayed as many staff who were on strike would take some time to return their work stations, local media reported citing Bangladesh Railway sources.

Mojibur Rahman, general secretary of Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Sramik Karmachari Union, announced the withdrawal of strike around 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday, after a meeting at the residence of the railway adviser on Minto Road. His announcement came following assurance of Railways Ministry Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan to meet their demands.

The meeting was attended by railway running staff leaders, government officials, student leaders, and a Bangladesh Nationalist Party – BNP leader.

Train drivers and their supporting staff observed the nationwide work abstention from Tuesday morning for special allowance after retirement and other demands.

Meanwhile, the bus services to and from Dhaka to other destinations temporarily initiated by Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) for the convenient of the railway passengers have been removed.
