Powerful tremors shake Bangladesh, Kathmandu

A powerful tremor shook Nepal's capital Kathmandu just before dawn on Tuesday (Jan 7). The 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote Himalayan region near Mount Everest, AFP reported.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre of the quake was located 93 kilometres (57 miles) from Lobuche in Nepal, along the mountainous border with Tibet in China. Buildings shook in Kathmandu, more than 200 kilometres to the southeast.

Tremor jolts Dhaka, other parts of country
An earthquake was also felt in the capital and different parts of Bangladesh on Tuesday (Jan 7) morning as the epicenter of the tremor was Xizang province in China, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The tremor, measuring 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale, struck the epicenter at 7.05 a.m. Bangladesh Standard Time (BST) and the epicenter was around 618 kilometers north-west from (BMD)'s seismic center at Agargaon in the capital, it said.

However, no damages or casualties were reported in the country due to the earthquake.

Death toll from quake in China's Tibet jumps to 53
The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck China's remote Tibet region on Tuesday morning jumped to at least 53, state media reported.

"Fifty-three people have been confirmed dead, and 62 others injured as of Tuesday noon, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday," Xinhua news agency said.
