Bangladesh earn draw against Pakistan

Shamsunnahar Jr scored a last-gasp equalizer as Bangladesh managed a 1-1 draw against Pakistan in their opening match of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2024 at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu Sunday (Oct 20). Shamsunnahar converted Ritu Porna Chakma's cross from close range on stoppage-time after Zahmena Malik put Pakistan ahead in the first half from a counter attack.

Sabina Khatun-led side dominated the game and created more chances but they lacked finishing touch in front of goal as Pakistan’s defence stood solid to prevent attacks on most occasions.

Against the run of play followed by Sheuli Azim’s failure to clear a long ball, Pakistan’s Zahmena capitalized on the advantage to take the lead against Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma in the 32nd minute.

After conceding, the women in red and green did not stop in their pursuit of an equalizer. From the left wing, Ritu Porna delivered at least three crosses inside the box but the right finisher was lacking. She also hit the woodwork once in the second half before providing the vital assist for the dramatic equalizer for Bangladesh.

Hard-working Shamsunnahar Jr was waiting for the moment as her flawless touch at the near bar secured a crucial point for Bangladesh in their bid to reach the semi-finals and defend the title.

Bangladesh made notable changes in their playing XI as Maria Manda and Sanjida Akter were left on the bench paving the way for Sapna Rani and Shamsunnahar Jr to start in midfield and right wing respectively.

Monika Chakma marshalled the midfield well as she was named the Player of the Match while Ritu Porna also deserves special mention for her show.

Bangladesh face India in their second and last group match Wednesday.

Bangladesh XI:
Rupna Chakma; Sheuli Azim, Shamsunnahar, Afeida Khandakar, Kohati Kisku; Monika Chakma, Sapna Rani, Sabina Khatun; Ritu Porna Chakma, Shamsunnahar Jr, Tohura Khatun
