Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam has urged everybody to abide by the law saying mob justice in no way is acceptable. He sought cooperation from the countrymen to stop recurrence of the incidents of mob justice or lynching. IGP Md Mainul Islam was exchanging views with the journalists at Chattogram Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Saturday (Sep 28), local media reported.
Referring to the incidents occurred on Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University campuses the IGP said, if anyone commits any crime, should be handed over to the law enforcing agencies. In no way, one can take the law in their own hands, he added.
IGP assured that every murder would be properly investigated through the fact finding committee. He said communal harmony will be protected in the country with strong hand and none will be allowed to destroy social peace.
Terming Bangladesh a shining example of communal harmony; the IGP said Bangladesh Police is committed to ensuring the overall security of all citizens, including minority communities.
There is no reason of fear if name of an innocent person or journalist is included in the FIR of a case, he said.
IGP noted that many policemen have also been accused in many cases, saying necessary directives were given to verify the authenticity before registering a case with police station.
“If someone is really involved, he can be arrested. If an innocent person is accused, it will be verified,” he said adding that “So there is no reason to be afraid of it.”
Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) AKM Shahidur Rahman, Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Hasib Aziz and senior officials of police were present.
