Ready Made Garment (RMG) factory owners at a meeting on Saturday (Sep 14) unanimously decided to remain open their factories across the country from Sunday (Sep 15). They also decided that owners can remain shut those factories according to law for the sake of the country and industry, safeguarding the employment of the workers as well and if the workers do not work in any factory. The decision was taken at a view-exchange meeting on the current crisis and way forward of the RMG industries situated in Ashulia held at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) complex in the city's Uttara area, local media reported.

Industries Adviser to the interim government Adilur Rahman Khan, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter, Labour and Employment Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Labour Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman, 9th Division GOC Major General M Moin Khan, BGMEA and BKMEA leaders attended the meeting presided over by BGMEA president Khandaker Rafiqul Islam.

The meeting expressed grave concern over the current labour situation in the RMG industry stating that if such situation continues, then the major export-oriented garment sector would be geopardized. The advisers in the meeting urged the RMG owners to keep their factories open from Sunday.

Giving assurance of providing all sorts of security, they said if unrest is created in any factory, then the government would take special measures.

Labour union leaders also attended the meeting.
