‘Unrest in RMG factories being instigated by outsiders’

‘Unrest in RMG factories being instigated by outsiders’

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam on Wednesday (Sep 4) said unrest in the ready-made garment (RMG) factories of Ashulia, Savar and Gazipur areas has predominantly been instigated by outsiders. “These outsiders are posing significant challenges to the smooth operation of factories. Around 170 factories are on the brink of closure due to ongoing unrest in the industrial areas of Ashulia, Savar and Gazipur. Law enforcement agencies have assured us of ensuring safety and security of the industrial zones, enabling factories to reopen tomorrow morning,” he said. The BGMEA president said this at a press conference at the BGMEA office in Uttara.

Rafiqul Islam sought the Chief Adviser’s intervention to safeguard the industry and the economy.

BGMEA Senior Vice-President Abdullah Hil Rakib said the current unrest is not only affecting the apparel sector but also other industries, including the pharmaceuticals. He assured that the problems do not stem from internal workers. “When factories manage to fend off one group of outsiders, large numbers often arrive to launch further attacks, leading to factory closures,” he added.
