The interim government on Wednesday (Aug 14) appointed Financial Institutions Division (FID) Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Khan as the new chief of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), hours after cancelling the contractual appointment of Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification regarding this decision on Wednesday. Tenure of Mr Muneem was scheduled to expire in 2026.

A section of businessmen have alleged Muneem of corruption, and some tax officials joined the protest demanding his resignation following the ouster of Awami League government on Aug 5.
The Bangladesh Awami League administration extended Muneem’s tenure by two years in January on a contractual basis.
The new NBR chief is the secretary of finance ministry’s FID branch, and would also serve as the secretary of the ministry’s Internal Resources Division (IRD), according to a notification issued by the Public Administration Ministry on Wednesday.
Bangladesh was rocked by a student-led protest in mid-July demanding reformation of the discriminatory public sector job quotas. Hundreds of people were killed before Hasina resigned and fled the country on Aug 5.
An interim government headed by Dr Yunus was sworn in on Aug 8. Since then, there have been changes to senior positions in various sectors.
