Safe Motherhood Day

Safe Motherhood Day

The 'Safe Motherhood Day-2024' will be observed in Bangladesh in a befitting manner on Tuesday (May 28). Like every year, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry has taken extensive programmes to observe day this year with the theme "Make baby delivery in hospitals, save mothers' and newborns' lives", local media reported.

Safe motherhood means ensuring safe healthcare for all women during pregnancy, delivery and post delivery.

Every year the Safe Motherhood Day observed in the country on May 28 since 1988 to promote safe maternal health, reduce maternal mortality and ensure the health of newborns.

In 1997, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave approval to observing the day while the day was observed on May 28 in 1998 for the first time in the country.

Later, the World Health Organization (WHO) included the initiative in sustainable development strategy in 2015.
