Selim Al Deen's 74th birth anniversary observed at JU

The 74th birth anniversary of eminent playwright Selim Al Deen was observed on Friday (Aug 18) on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus with due respect. Marking the day, JU Drama and Dramatics department brought out a procession from the Old Arts Faculty building premises in the morning. Dean of Arts and Humanities faculty Prof Mozammel Haque, chairman of JU Drama and Dramatics Department Prof Israfil Ahmed, eminent theater activist Shahiduzzaman Selim, among others, participated in the procession, local media reported.

Parading the main streets of the campus, the procession ended coming at the grave of Selim Al Deen beside the central mosque of the campus. Later, JU Drama and Dramatics department, Gram Theatre, Taluknagar Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Bangladesh Putul Natto Gobeshona o Unnayan Kendra, Swapnadal theater and Arshinagar Theatre placed wreaths to the grave of Natyacharya Selim Al Deen at around 10:30 a.m.

The day-long programme featured seminar, photography exhibition, cinema screening and felicitation ceremony for Inter-University Cultural Competition Champion Team of JU. 

Selim Al Deen, fondly referred to as 'Natyacharya', was born on Aug 18, 1949 in Feni. He joined Jahangirnagar University in 1974 at the Bangla department and later became the founder chairperson of the Drama and Dramatics Department of the university.

He died of cardiac arrest on Jan 14, 2008.
