The ruling Bangladesh Awami League on Saturday (Apr 15) finalised its candidates for contesting in the forthcoming elections to five city corporations. The decision was taken in a meeting of Awami League Local Government Representative Nomination Board held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka, said a press release. The party President and also the President of the Awami League Local Government Representative Nomination Board, Sheikh Hasina, chaired the meeting.
According to the announcement of the Election Commission, the election to the Gazipur City Corporation will be held on May 25. The elections to the Khulna and Barishal City Corporations will be held on Jun 12 while Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporations on Jun 21.
AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has got the Awami League ticket to run for mayor in the Rajshahi City Corporation elections while Talukder Abdul Khaleque in Khulna City Corporation polls, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury in Sylhet polls, Abul Khair Abdullah in Barishal polls and Azmat Ullah Khan in Gazipur polls.
Meanwhile, Awami League also gave party nominations to Md Fazlul Haque, Md Nurul Islam and Mohammad Main Uddin for vying in Tarakanda Upazila Parishad elections in Mymensingh, Jagannathpur Upazila Parishad polls in Sunamganj and Sandwip Upazila polls in Chattogram respectively.
Besides, the party picked five candidates in municipal elections where Amirul Islam (Bakul) was nominated for Talora Municipality of Bogura.
Abdur Rahim Ahmed got nomination for Basail Municipality of Tangail while Md Sundar Ali for Narayanganj's Araihajar Municipality, M A Halim Sikdar for Narayanganj Gopaldi Municipality and Mahabubur Rahman Chowdhury for Cox's Bazar Municipality.
Awami League picked candidates for six Union Parishads (UPs) where Mostafizar Rahman was nominated for Chandkhana UP of Kishoreganj Upazila of Nilphamari District.
Tanvir Hasan Dalim is picked for Nazirpur UP of Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur district while Md Jahangir Alam for Kakrabunia UP of Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali district, Abdul Hai for Charpata UP of Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola district, Md Abdur Rahman for Netrakona Sadar Upazila's Dakkhin Bishiura UP of Netrakona district and Salim Ahmed for Chandanpur UP of Meghna upazila of Cumilla district.
