Polls schedule for five city corporations announced

Bangladesh Election Commission has announced the polls schedule for five city corporations of the country. M Jahangir Alam, secretary of the EC secretariat, made this announcement on Monday (Apr 3) following the 17th meeting of the EC held at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city's Agargaon area, local media reported.

As per the schedule, Gazipur City Corporation polls will be held on May 25,  Khulna and Barishal City Corporations on Jun 12 and Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporations polls will be held on Jun 21.

In Gazipur City Corporation, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is on Apr 27 while its scrutiny is on Apr 30, lodging appeal against the  nomination paper scrutiny from May 2-4, appeal resolve from May 5-7 and the  last date for withdrawal of candidature is on May 8.

Symbols distribution on May 9 and voting will take place on May 25 as per the election schedules.

In Khulna and Barishal City Corporations, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is on May 16, its scrutiny on May 18, lodging appeal against the nomination paper scrutiny from May 19-21, appeal resolve from May 22-24 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature on May 25.

Symbols distribution on May 26 and voting will take place on Jun 12.

In Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporations, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is on May 23, its scrutiny on May 25, lodging appeal against the nomination paper scrutiny from May 26-28, appeal resolve from May 29-31 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature on Jun 1. Symbols distribution on Jun 2 and voting will be held on Jun 21.

The election to the five cities will be held with the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), said Alam, adding that close-circuit cameras will also be installed in the polling centers to monitor the polls.

The voting will be started from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. without any recess. ECs own officials will be performed as the returning officers in these city polls.

The voting related information will be updated after every two hours.
