The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Thursday (Jan 12) celebrated the 'University Day' marking its 52nd founding anniversary on the campus amid festive mood. Marking the day, JU wore a festive look with the participation of former and current students, teachers, employees and officials with colorful banners, balloons and festoons. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nurul Alam inaugurated the programme by hoisting the national flag and releasing balloons in front of the Business Studies Faculty of the university at 10 a.m., local media reported.
In the inaugural speech, Prof Nurul Alam greeted university teachers, students, officers, employees and the present and former students of the university.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq and treasurer Prof Rasheda Akhtar were present at the inaugural session among others. Acting registrar Rahima Kaneez conducted the programme.
Later, led by Prof Nurul Alam a colourful procession was brought out from the Business Studies faculty premises. The procession paraded main streets of the campus and ended at Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha.
The daylong programme included a puppet show, job fair, blood group test campaign, tree plantation, pitha festival, cultural function organised by Student Welfare and Counseling Centre of the university, staging drama, cultural functions by Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and folk music festival at the Selim Al Deen Mukta mancha.
Jahangirnagar University was founded near Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Aug 20, 1970. It formally began its academic activities as a residential university on Jan 12, 1971, with four departments, 21 teachers, 150 students and three residential halls.
