Shafin Ahmed to contest DNCC mayoral race

Shafin Ahmed to contest DNCC mayoral race

Shafin Ahmed, lead vocalist and Bassist of popular rock band Miles, is going to compete in the mayoral by-polls to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). He will join the DNCC polls as a mayoral candidate from Bobby Hajjaj's party Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM). NDM Founder-Chairman Bobby Hajjaj announced Shafin as the supported candidate, at a press conference in Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday (Dec 26).

Shafin is a high council member of NDM. The party hasn't received approval from the Election Commission yet, though they applied for registration. Shafin may run for the election as a liberal candidate, if NDM is denied registration or not get registered before DNCC polls.

Former president of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exports Association (BGMEA) Md Atiqul Islam is likely to get ruling party ticket while Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP is likely to nominate Tabith Awal.

Mayor Annisul Huq, who passed away in November, defeated his nearest contestant Tabith in the last DNCC election held in 2015. However, BNP boycotted when the polls were halfway through.

The Election Commission had said the polls will be held in the last week of February next year, with the full schedule being announced in the second week of January.

In November 2011, the Bangladesh Awami league-led government split the Dhaka City Corporation into two. The first election to the undivided DCC was held in January 1994, and Mohammad Hanif became the first elected mayor.
