The reason why Chrome users are jumping ship to Firefox

The reason why Chrome users are jumping ship to Firefox

Google Chrome has enjoyed the lion’s share of the browser market for some time but it now seems that it may have a serious rival in the form of Firefox Quantum.

Launched last month, Quantum promises super fast web browsing, with Mozilla claiming it is twice as fast as previous versions of Firefox, with the browser capable of achieving faster browsing speeds while using less memory. Mozilla also claims that it has already been installed by 170 million users worldwide, adding that a number of Google Chrome users are jumping ship. Apparently, there has been a 44% increase in downloads compared to the same time last year and a 48% increase in the number of people downloading Firefox Focus, which is available for Android and iOS devices.

Firefox Senior Vice President Mark Mayo revealed the figures to CNET, and laid down the marker for Mozilla in 2018. He said: “We’ll need to absolutely kill it for all of 2018 to see real change there. “I intend to do just that.” It seems that Firefox still has some way to go to catch up Chrome with the Google browser enjoying a 58.83% market share compared to Firefox’s 13.54% according to NetMarketShare. This latest news comes after Google announced some major updates for their browser including a major ad blocking feature. Although it won’t block all adverts it will block the ones that it classes as unacceptable.

Describing the upcoming feature, Google said: “Chrome has always focused on giving you the best possible experience browsing the web. For example, it prevents pop-ups in new tabs based on the fact that they are annoying.“In dialogue with the Coalition and other industry groups, we plan to have Chrome stop showing ads (including those owned or served by Google) on websites that are not compliant with the Better Ads Standards.”

The Google Chrome ad blocking feature will become available in early 2018.
