Bangladesh Election Commission is ready to hold the by-polls to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation within the next 90 days as the post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq.

The EC would start the election process soon after the gazette published by the local government ministry declaring the mayoral post vacant, Election Commission acting secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban on Sunday (Dec 4).

According to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, Election Commission has also a legal obligation to complete the by-election within 90 days.

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League-backed candidate, Annisul Huq was elected mayor in the DNCC election held in April, 2015 defeating the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-baked candidate Tabith Mohammed Awal.

DNCC mayor Annisul Huq passed away, at the age of 65, on Thursday (Nov 30) while undergoing treatment at Wellington Hospital in London. He was diagnosed with cerebral vasculitis after admitted there in August this year.

Annisul was buried in Banani graveyard on Saturday.
