SAARC handicrafts exhibition, cultural fest

A four-day SAARC exhibition and workshop on handicrafts and SAAARC cultural festival on traditional dance will begin today at the Nandan Mancha of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the capital.

Aiming to promote the culture and heritage of the SAAARC countries, Shilpakala Academy, in association with the Cultural Ministry of Bangladesh and SAARC Cultural Centre, Sri Lanka, has organised the event.

Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Ibraheem Hosein Khan will attend the inaugural ceremony as chief guest, while director of the SAARC Cultural Centre Wasanthe Kotuwella will be present as special guest at the opening ceremony. Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky will preside over the inaugural ceremony.

The programme will begin with the performance of traditional lathi Khela on the open yard of Shilpakala Academy today in the afternoon. The four-day event will also feature cultural programme and dance performances by the artistes of India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bangladesh.

The handicrafts from Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka will also be exhibited at the National Art Gallery of Shilpakala Academy. Besides, workshop on handicraft will be held on Dec 1 and 2 which will be conducted by artist Kamruzzaman and traditional dance workshop, conducted by renowned dancer Tamanna Rahman, will be held at gallery 4 of the Jatiya Chitrashala (National Art Plaza) and seminar hall of Jatiya Natyashala (National Theatre Hall) respectively.

The closing ceremony of the event will be held at the National Theatre Hall of Shilpakala Academy on Dec 3.

The disclosures were made at the Shilpakala Academy seminar hall on Wednesday (Nov 29), where SAARC Cultural Centre director Wasante Kotuwella, Deputy Director Kishani Jayasinghe Wijayasekara and others were present. Shilpakala Academy DG chaired the session.
