4G service in 'January next year'

4G service in 'January next year'

State Minister for Post and Telecommunication Tarana Halim said the mobile operators will launch high speed fourth-generation (4G) telecom service in January 2018. She made the disclosure in a press conference at secretariat on Wednesday (Nov 29), local media reports said.

Tarana said the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also in charge of the telecom ministry, already approved the revised guideline on spectrum auction.

The guideline, which was approved after resolving the objections of the mobile phone operators, will be sent to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, and BTRC will now move to call an auction for spectrum allocation and 4G licence.

The auction can be expected in January next year and not in December as previously planned. Earlier in September, the telecom division approved the guideline on 4G licensing which raised concerns to the operators.

It was learnt that, as per final guidelines, the primary speed of 4G internet services will be 20 Megabits per Second (MBPS).
