BNP gets permission to hold rally

BNP gets permission to hold rally

Dhaka Metropolitan Police today allowed Bangladesh Nationalist Party to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka tomorrow marking the "National Revolution and Solidarity Day" but there are 23 conditions. Chairperson of the party Begum Khaleda Zia, also a former Prime Minister, is expected to address the rally which is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday (Nov 11) said it got conditional permission from the authorities concerned to hold its public rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Sunday (Nov 12).

Speaking at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they were allowed to stage the rally on 23 conditions, local media reports said.

On Friday last, BNP announced to hold the rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday (Nov 8) marking the "National Revolution and Solidarity Day". Later, the party deferred it to Sunday for various reasons.

On Nov 7, 1975, an uprising following a coup catapulted Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman to power. The BNP observes the day as "National Revolution and Solidarity Day".

However, Bangladesh Awami League does not recognise the occasion and instead refers to Nov 7 as "Freedom Fighters Massacre Day".
