MNP service launched in Bangladesh

MNP service launched in Bangladesh

Much-awaited mobile number portability (MNP) service has been launched on Tuesday (Nov 7) for the first time in the country, which will enable the users to switch to a different operator without changing their phone numbers.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in a programme at its office handed a notification letter formally to Infozillion BD-Teletech Consortium to provide the service by using the existing operators of the country, local media reports said.

The top officials of BTRC including its chairman Shahjahan Mahmud and Infozillion BD-Teletech Consortium were present during the programme.

Post and Telecommunication Ministry earlier on Oct 15 directed BTRC to launch the service. A license was issued to Infozillion BD-Teletech Consortium on Nov 1.

The Consortium has to provide the service to at least one percent mobile users in next six months and five percent in one year and 10 percent in five years.

The users will have to pay Tk 30 to change their mobile operators for the first time which will take at least 72 hours. And switching to another operator a second time will take 90 days.

Infozillion BD-Teletech Consortium got the license competing with four other companies in the tender bid to provide the service for 15 years, that later can be extended by another five years.

BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmud said MNP will raise the service quality of mobile operators.

BTRC has been trying to introduce the MNP service, which would help bring more competition to the market and improve the service quality, for the last few years.

Some 72 countries, including neighboring India and Pakistan, have introduced the service with Singapore being the pioneer in this field.
