HC clears way to hold DNCC by-election

HC clears way to hold DNCC by-election

The High Court on Wednesday (Jan 16) cleared way to hold by-polls of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) as it discharged a rule challenging the legality of the election’s schedule. A High Court division bench comprising Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order, local media reports said.

“The High Court earlier stayed the schedule of the election following a writ petition filed in this regard. Today the court discharged the rule as the lawyer of the petitioner failed to appear before it for hearing,” Bangladesh Election Commission counsel Touhidul Islam said on Wednesday.

The post of DNCC Mayor fell vacant after the sudden demise of Annisul Huq on Nov 30, 2017. The Election Commission on Jan 9, 2018, declared schedule to hold polls for the Mayoral post and 36 new wards in the two city corporations.

Following a writ, the High Court first stayed the election for six months and later extended the period of the stay.
