Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for her treatment on Saturday (Oct 6), local media reports said.
“Khaleda Zia has been given a VIP cabin where she will stay during her treatment,” director of BSMMU Brig Gen Abdullah Al Harun told reporters.
A five-member medical board that has been formed for the treatment of Khaleda will hold a meeting on Sunday (Oct 7), he said.
On Oct 4, the High Court issued directives asking the authorities concerned to send the BNP chief immediately to BSMMU for treatment.
The order was given on a writ petition seeking the HC directives on the authorities concerned to send her to a specialized hospital from prison.
The court also directed to form a five-member fresh medical board, barring members of Shadhinota Chikitshak Porishad (SHACHIP) and Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), for her treatment.
As per the HC order, BSMMU Internal Medicine Department Prof Md Abdul Jalil Chowdhury and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Associate Professor Dr Badrunnesa Ahmed will be in the board. Other three members of the board will be included as per Khaleda Zia’s choice.
Khaleda, a former Prime Minister, can take physiotherapists, gynecologists and technicians by her choice. She can also take specialized physicians outside BSMMU after receiving permission of the board.
On Feb 8, a Dhaka Court awarded a 5-year imprisonment to Khaleda in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Later, she was sent to the former Central Jail in Old Dhaka.
