India face Maldives in SAFF championship final

India face Maldives in SAFF championship final

Holders India made their 11th final berth of the seven-nation SAFF Suzuki Cup eliminating their arch-rival Pakistan by 3-1 goals in the second semifinal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka on Wednesday (Sep 12).

The seven-time champions India will play the final on Saturday (Sep 15) at 7 p.m. at the same venue against the Maldives, the champions of 2008 SAAF Cup, which made their final berth shocking spirited Nepal by 3-0 goals in the first semifinal earlier in the day.

Despite a goalless first half, Manvir soon turned the game on its head with his first goal in the 49th minutes. 20 minutes later, he doubled India's lead only for substitute Sumeet Passi to come later and seal the match for India in the 83rd minute.

Pakistan got a consolation goal when Hassan Bashir scored their only goal of the match in the 88th minute, but it was too little and too late for the Pakistanis as they bowed out of 2018 SAFF Cup.
