Jatiya Party's Akkas wins Kurigram-3 by-polls

Jatiya Party candidate Dr Akkas Ali was unofficially declared elected in the by-polls to Kurigram-3 constituency held on Wednesday (Jul 25).

Jatiya Party contender Dr Akkas Ali Sarkar won the by-polls to Kurigram-3 constituency, according to unofficial results. Akkas Ali Sarkar got 82,598 votes and defeated his competitor Bangladesh Awami League candidate Prof MA Matin by 2,703 votes.

Voting started around 8:00 a.m. and continued till 4:00 p.m. is a peaceful manner, local media reports said.

Voting took place in 159 polling stations in the constituency comprised of one municipality, 12 unions of Ulipur upazila and 4 unions in Chilmari upazila. A total of 363,075 voters were registered under the constituency. 

 Over 3,000 security personnel were deployed to check violation of code of conduct in the election area. 

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party MP AKM Mayeedul Islam who died on May 10.
