While Game of Thrones fans are anxiously waiting for the final season of the hit show to drop, HBO confirmed reports that a prequel for the series has been ordered.
HBO has ordered a pilot episode for the prequel, which will be set thousands of years before the battles over the Iron Throne. The as yet untitled prequel was created by British screenwriter Jane Goldman with author George R.R. Martin.
However, the show will not be broadcast until after Game of Thrones’ final season which is due to be released in 2019.
HBO said in a statement that if picked up, the prequel will chronicle “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.”
According to several reports, there’s a lot of potential for where this project could go — and the twists it could take when the truth behind these myths is revealed.
Game of Thrones is HBO's most popular series to date. It has won multiple Emmy awards and drawn tens of millions of viewers worldwide.
