Poet Belal Chowdhury passes away

Prominent poet Belal Chowdhury died at a hospital in Dhaka today at the age of 80. Belal, who had been suffering with multiple ailments, breathed his last in the noon at Intensive Care Unit of Anwar Khan Modern Hospital, according to the hospital authority. He was receiving treatment and was put on life support on Friday (Apr 20), local media reports said.

Belal Chowdhury was admitted to the hospital in November with various old age complications, including kidney problem and anaemia, according to hospital sources.

Belal Chowdhury served 'Bharat Bichitra' as its Editor, published from Indian embassy in Dhaka. He was also an Editor of 'Shaptahik Sandwip' and 'Krittibas', a Bengali poetry magazine edited by Sunil Gangopadhyay.

Chowdhury also has reputation as journalist, essayist and translator. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2014 for his literary contribution. He also received Bangla Academy Literary Award.

Belal Chowdhury was born on Nov 12, 1938 at Sharshdi in Feni in the then Bengal Presidency under the British rule.
